Golden Paragraph: Gaia Colombo holds an Associate Professor position in the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Department at the University of Ferrara and is researcher and professor of Pharmaceutical Technology. Her scientific activity develops in the field of pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics and pharmaceutical technology, focusing mainly on biopharmaceutical/pharmacokinetic and technological features of drug dosage forms. So far, Dr. Colombo’s production has led to the publication of 48 papers, as well as 5 patents and 8 book chapters.
Her research is carried on in collaboration with groups from Parma, Salerno, Bologna, Pavia and Rome in the fields of drug delivery, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology, human and veterinary medicine. Among these, there are other SimIhale members. In addition, fruitful collaborations have been established with several international groups in Europe, Malaysia and Australia.
The primary research activity in SimIhale is the formulation of drugs for nasal delivery, either for local/systemic action or to exploit the nose-to-brain path. In this regard, she mainly focuses on solid preparations in the form of microparticulates and agglomerates for nasal insufflation. Great attention is paid to study the preparations with respect to drug dissolution and release in experimental conditions mimicking the nasal environment (e.g. diffusion cells). In collaboration with other SimIhale members, she is involved in projects on lung delivery of antibiotics.
