Golden Paragraph: Paola Russo is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Salerno. Her research interests include formulation and characterisation of powders for inhalation, design and production of advanced drug delivery systems for oral or dermal/transdermal delivery. In particular, she is now involved in the design of dry powder inhalers containing drug active against Cystic Fibrosis, a pathology characterized by the production of a highly dense and sticky mucus in the lung, which impairs lung mucociliary function. Moreover, this mucus is often responsible for the failure of the inhalation therapies, hampering the drug dissolution after the deposition on the lung. Therefore, the research is now focused on the possibility to co-formulate the drug (antibiotic, antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory drugs) with molecules able to reduce mucus viscosity and to allow the active compound to dissolve and permeate through the mucus. To this aim, is mandatory to study the dissolution of the drug product in sputum from cystic fibrosis patient or in simulated mucus fluid.
